Cacao Recultivation Project

Playa Cacao owes its name to the cacao plantation that once shaped this part of the bay. Cacao is therefore more than just a crop here.

It forms part of the history, identity and landscape of the place.

Our goal is to gradually restore the former plantation and develop it into a diverse, nature-friendly cacao farm. Rather than creating a conventional monoculture, we intend to cultivate cacao within the existing tropical environment, alongside native trees and other useful plants. This approach helps protect the soil, supports biodiversity and preserves the natural character of the property.

The project will also explore the many possibilities offered by the cacao fruit.

Beyond chocolate, cacao can be used to produce cocoa butter, natural cosmetics, cacao tea, beverages, fermented drinks, liqueurs and a wide range of culinary products. Even the pulp and husks can be processed and reused.

Our Lodge guests will be able to visit the cacao plantation free of charge, learn about its history and follow the recultivation process.

As the project develops, these visits will also include the future processing and production areas.

The Cacao Recultivation Project is not only about growing cacao again.

It is about bringing an important part of Playa Cacao’s heritage back to life.
